Understanding the Basics

What Exactly Is Privnote?

Privnote is a free, browser-based service that allows anyone to compose a text message and receive a unique, one-time-use link. When the recipient opens that link, they read the message — and the moment they do, the note is permanently and irreversibly deleted from Privnote's servers.

Unlike email, messaging apps, or cloud notes, Privnote leaves no persistent copy of your message anywhere. The note exists only for the brief window between creation and first reading. Once read, it is gone — not archived, not recoverable, not accessible to anyone, including Privnote's own team.

This makes Privnote ideal for sharing passwords, sensitive personal information, confidential business instructions, one-time codes, or any content you want to communicate without creating a permanent digital record.

Step-by-Step Process

How Privnote Works

Three simple steps stand between you and perfectly private communication. No account. No software. No complexity.

1

Write Your Note

Visit Privnote.com and type your message directly into the text field. No account creation, no login, no personal information required. Your note is encrypted in your browser before it ever leaves your device.

2

Get a Unique Link

Click "Create Note" and Privnote generates a unique, one-time URL. This link contains the encrypted note. Share it via email, messaging app, or any communication channel you prefer. The link works exactly once.

3

Note Self-Destructs

When the recipient opens the link, they see the message. The instant it is displayed, Privnote permanently deletes it from the server. The link immediately becomes invalid. No trace remains anywhere.

The Encryption Process Explained

When you create a note on Privnote, the encryption happens entirely within your browser using JavaScript. The note text is encrypted client-side before being transmitted to Privnote's servers. This means that even during the brief window when the note is stored on Privnote's servers, the content is encrypted and not readable in plain text.

The unique link Privnote generates contains the decryption key as a URL fragment (the part after the # symbol). URL fragments are never sent to the server, which means Privnote's servers technically never receive the decryption key. Only the person with the full link can decrypt and read the message.

Capabilities Overview

Privnote's Core Features

Beyond the basics, Privnote offers a powerful set of options that give you precise control over how your notes are shared and when they expire.

Password Protection

Add an extra layer of security by setting a manual password. The recipient needs both the link AND the password to read the note. Communicate the password through a separate channel for maximum security.

Expiration Timers

Set notes to expire automatically after 1 hour, 24 hours, 7 days, or 30 days — even if never read. This is ideal when you need to ensure a note doesn't linger indefinitely if the recipient never opens it.

Read Notifications

Receive an email alert the moment your note is opened and destroyed. This lets you confirm that the intended recipient has read the message, or detect if someone accessed it unexpectedly.

No Account Required

Privnote requires absolutely no registration. You don't need to create an account, provide an email address, or share any personal information to use the service. Total anonymity from the start.

Instant Destruction

The destruction is not delayed or scheduled — it happens the instant the note is read. There is no grace period, no recovery window, and no backup. The deletion is immediate and permanent by design.

Works Everywhere

Privnote is a web-based service that works in any modern browser on any device — desktop, laptop, tablet, or smartphone. No app installation needed. No operating system restrictions.

Practical Applications

Privnote serves a remarkably wide range of users, from everyday individuals to security professionals. Here are the most common real-world applications.

Journalists and writers

Journalists & Researchers

Communicate sensitive source information, share confidential documents, or exchange tips without leaving a digital trail that could compromise sources or ongoing investigations.

Developers and tech users

Developers & Tech Teams

Safely onboard new team members by sharing initial credentials, environment variables, and configuration secrets through self-destructing notes rather than insecure Slack messages or emails.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the questions we hear most often about Privnote.

Absolutely. Privnote requires no registration whatsoever. You visit the website, type your note, click create, and share the link. No email address, no username, no password for your account — nothing. This is by design, as it protects your anonymity from the very first step.

If you open your own note link, the note will be destroyed just as if the recipient had opened it. The message will be displayed to you, then permanently deleted. The recipient will then receive a "note not found" message when they try to open the link. To avoid this, bookmark the note creation page and never click the generated link yourself — only copy and share it.

Privnote supports notes of substantial length — sufficient for most practical use cases including long passwords, detailed instructions, or multi-paragraph messages. While there is a technical character limit, it is generous enough that the vast majority of users never encounter it. For very large content, consider splitting it across multiple notes.

Privnote is a text-only service. It does not support file attachments, images, or binary data. If you need to share a file securely with self-destructing behavior, you would need to use a different service such as Bitwarden Send or One-Time Secret, which support file attachments alongside text.

You can enable the "Destruction Notification" option when creating your note. Enter your email address and Privnote will send you an alert the moment the note is opened and destroyed. Alternatively, if you try to open the link yourself later and see a "note not found" message, it means the note has already been read and destroyed.

Important Security Notice

Know Privnote's Limitations

Privnote is a powerful tool, but it is not a complete security solution. Understanding its limitations is just as important as knowing its features. Use it wisely and within its intended scope.

Privnote cannot prevent a recipient from taking a screenshot, copying the text, or photographing the screen. Once the message is displayed, the information is in the recipient's hands. The self-destruction only prevents the note from being re-accessed via the link — it does not prevent the recipient from preserving the content by other means.

Do NOT use for highly sensitive data
Financial credentials, legal documents, or corporate secrets should use stronger encryption tools
Beware of phishing impostors
Only use the official privnote.com domain — fake clones exist that intercept your messages
Ideal for temporary passwords & codes
Perfect for one-time access credentials, verification codes, and short-term instructions
Great for reducing email clutter
Keeps sensitive information out of email archives and message histories
